General Definition of Work

The custodian, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion providing and maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy environment for staff, students, and visitors. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Head Custodian.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.


Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness both inside and outside the facility through the execution of established procedures
  • Inspect school grounds daily to remove debris and other items that could become a safety hazard or detract from the general appearance of the school
  • Clean classrooms, including but not limited to, removing trash, dusting furniture and equipment, sweeping and mopping the floors, and polishing metal fixtures
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including but not limited to, fixtures, sinks, urinals, toilets, showers; replenish supplies in restrooms
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets
  • Clean all staff and special purpose areas, including but not limited to, dusting and polishing furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness of windows, mirrors, walls, desks, and tables/countertops
  • Follow developed work schedules for scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors
  • Follow developed work schedules for extracting, spot cleaning, and vacuuming carpeted areas
  • Perform light maintenance by replacing light bulbs and air filters, clean air vents, and adjusted blinds/shades as requested
  • Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles; pick up papers and other debris
  • Assist in receiving, storing, and distributing supplies and equipment as needed. Keep all storage areas organized and clean
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up rooms for conferences and meetings
  • Identify and report building maintenance needs; assist maintenance staff with repairs
  • Maintain and operate a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum polishers and wax strippers
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Education and Experience

  • Completion of education at a level which provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job required
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Custodial experience preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
